The coffee filter was invented by Melitta Bentz, a housewife from Dresden, Germany. After she experimented with different materials, she used her son's blotter paper from school. She cut a circle, put it in a metal cup and on June 20, 1908, her coffee filter and filter paper were patented.

From a caffeine perspective, espresso actually has about 1/3 the caffeine content as regularly brewed coffee. This is due to the length of time that the coffee is in actual contact with water for extraction. With espresso, coffee contact with hot water is 25 seconds or so, while with drip-brewed or french press methods, it is about 4 minutes. The longer that coffee is in contact with hot water, the more caffeine in your cup.
